Iyanya, AY, Tekno, Angel Ufuoma Others Dazzle in Superstar

Leading lights in the nation’s entertainment industry recently regrouped to tantalize movie buffs in Superstar, a new and riveting international film from the stable of US based Nigerian-born filmmaker, Tony Abulu.
Superstar, which painstakingly  tells the story of a talented and aspiring young Nigerian musician from the ghetto and seeking stardom in the competitive Nigerian music industry, would hit cinemas nationwide on June 5, courtesy of Silverbird Distributions.
Leading the pack of famous entertainers who dazzled and thrilled lovers of quality flicks in the big budget film are music star, Iyanya, comedy crown prince, Ay, Nollywood newest sensation, Angel Ufuoma and rising hip hop act, Tekno.
Others are: veterans Jide Kosoko, Tina Amuziam and Rachael Oniga. Comedy sensations Funnybone, Pencil, ex Mister Nigeria, Bryan Okwara, Lilian Esoro and several others also wowed in the suspense-filled creative work of art.
Abulu, who doubles as the CEO of Black Ivory Limited, an entertainment company with over 30 years experience in filmmaking, international  distribution, marketing and African cultural exposition stated that Superstar is billed to officially introduce the Nigerian music industry to the global market, thereby ushering in the much needed foreign exchange to further develop the vibrant music industry.
Speaking further from his New York base, Abulu happily explained why he is proudly fusing music and Nollywood in Superstar.
“The Nigerian music industry just like Nollywood has amazing potential.  The young folks against all odds have followed in the giant musical strides of the late icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and emerged with a vibrant, pulsating, polyrhythmic and explosive brand of music that has the infectious potential to take the world by storm. All they need now is a coordinated effort and support to package and present them as a solid Afrobeat brand and Nigeria will have yet another veritable foreign exchange earner like Nollywood.”
The Project Act Nollywood supported film had talented Ufuoma Okonoko as its associate producer. She was backed by a highly experienced USA team at Blaze Channel, led by Caroline Okolo.
The highly interesting, dramatic and often times hilarious film is being powered by MNET/DStv, Sovereign Trust Plc and Blaze Channel, USA.
Abulu’s other works as a revered director, include: Doctor Bello, Back To Africa and Crazy Like a Fox.

I Read My Wife's Message to Her EX...Now I'm Confused!

I have been married for about five years now and all seem to be going on well in my family until a couple of months ago when I lost my job. I noticed my wife’s unusual attachment to her phone, the way she guards it from me was becoming annoying but I kept my cool. Of course, like a suspicious lover, I went behind her on this fateful day while she was asleep to her check phone. To cut long story short, that very day, my wife had asked her ex when they were going to meet and get intimate after a long time. I read further, I realised the guy was also married with a kid just like us. And more so, he’s not financially better off me from their conversation.

I’m still in shock as to what could have prompted my wife to do this because, if its love making, I make sure I satisfy her. I’m not a selfish man when it comes to performing my duty as a man.
The one that pained me the most was something she said about him been the reason for her happiness. I have not stopped checking her phone from time to time since then, though I realise the tune of their conversation have changed. They simply just ask about each other’s family. This has continued for sometime now, that I was tempted to think what I saw on that day was just a spur-of-the-moment on the part of my wife or am I just in denial?

God! What do I do? Do I confront her? Take the matter to her family? I wanted to report her to our pastor but I don’t want a situation where it will leak out in church.

Bolaji Rosiji Gets Award

Former PMAN president, Bolaji Rosiji was recently honoured with an award by Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria at the first edition of the FUMAN Elders Day held recently.
The award which was presented to the Heart of Gold singer, by Alhaji Kollington Ayinla, was a token of FUMAN’s appreciation to him for his support for the elders of the Association from his days as PMAN president. Bolaji in his time as President, organised the first Legend Night, hence it was a well-deserved honour for Mr. Bolaji Rosiji who was full of smiles while mingling freely with everyone at the event which also had top Fuji artiste Pasuma igniting the atmosphere with his stellar performance.
In his speech, the former PMAN president who is also FUMAN patron pledged to join elders of the association, the likes of Fuji Maestro Alhaji Kollington to make FUMAN a force to reckon with. He supported the elders with equipment and cash of N100,000.
According to him, “One of the reasons why I am interested in this constituency and indeed other constituencies is because I have a principle and that principle is music, culture and development. They are all intertwined. And also I have always celebrated the elders. Remember the event that we did for Legends of PMAN many years ago, Legend Night that was an expression of that passion for this constituency”.
“Fuji is the means of communication among our people. We have various forms of music in terms of the Yoruba genre. You have the Apala, Sakara, Fuji and so many other genres but Fuji has become a main movement within that sub-culture. So it is an important constituency.
Bolaji Rosiji revealed his plans to do something about indigenous music, not only for the Yoruba genre also in the east and in the north. “I have talked extensively with Danmaraya Jos and the likes. We are losing them. I remember in an assembly of Yoruba musicians; they were only a couple of Apala musicians left. They are all going and this is a genre of music that has brought up generations of parents. So we are trying to see what we can do to revive it. So its music, culture and then we can have development”.
On PMAN crisis, the Caretaker Committee he said, “In my last count, I think PMAN had about five presidents. So what we need to do is to forget about our personal interest. We have to just shelve personal interest and work for the union. I will commend any effort to bring concerned stakeholders together. I commend any effort like that but we want to see the fruit of that effort. We want to see where it has led us. I’ve been speaking to Kevin Lucciano he has several challenges and there is no one who is going to take on the mantle of leadership in PMAN that is not going to have those challenges. But what we need now is one PMAN that everyone recognizes and we are still looking forward to that day.

Asked if he has any plans to run for PMAN president again, he said, “I won’t do that but definitely if there is room for us to help in the monitoring the electoral process I will be happy to be part of that”.

Kate Henshaw Is My Only Nollywood Crush- Matthew Dada

...why I can’t play a gay role

Nigerian born, US-based actor, Matthew Dada is certainly one actor to watch out for. Though he played a cameo in a Nollywood production some four years ago, he landed his first major Nollywood role recently on the set of Kabira Kafidipe’s movie, “Bintu”.
Matthew who described the set of “Bintu” as a generally friendly and professional atmosphere, said, Nollywood has advanced far beyond his expectation. “Being able to be part of Nollywood is a privilege. Like the movie I just acted, I played the role of a drama director/bad guy. It was one of those roles that, if you are used to playing a particular kind of guy, they have you play something outside of yourself so to speak. But it wasn’t challenging because Kabira was the one that directed it. She had a way of telling you what she wants from your character. It’s one of those things as an actor, if a director put something before you; you go ahead and run with it. And I’m one of those types of people that regardless of how challenging the role might be, if a director tells me this is what he or she wants I go ahead and deliver. I did what I was supposed to do and she loved the whole thing.
Asked if he has any Nollywood crush, the dark, hunky actor said, “Actually I do have one. I got to meet her in 2013 when I came to Nigeria while I was attending an audition of Femi Branch. Kate Henshaw is probably my only crush in Nollywood. She’s such a fantastic person. She’s so welcoming and very warm as a person. For someone of her status, she was so down-to-earth. She was so supportive on set. That’s why I say she’s probably my only crush in Nollywood”.
In another shocking revelation, the actor who revealed he has a lot to offer to Nollywood even though he respects the great talents in the industry said his only restriction as far as interpreting his passion is concern is that he can’t play a gay role. “I have been in the US for quite a while and I’ve done a lot of short films and films and there is no limit to how far I can push myself when it comes to expressing this beautiful passion of acting. But, I have just one restriction. I can’t see myself being gay. I can’t play a gay person. That’s the only restriction I have. Everything else, as far as nudity is concern I’m very, very comfortable in my own skin”.
“I don’t have anything against gay people but personally I just can’t play that role”.

9ice Addresses ‘Cracked Voice’ Says Age Has A Lot To Do With It

At the same media briefing announcing the return of ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes imprint and the sponsored Coded Tunes Reunion Concert, 9ice who graced the event with his presence addressed one of the issues that have lingered concerning his music career.
Without mincing words, the singer opened up on his seemingly ‘cracked voice’ which he attributed to age. “At the time we were recording my first album I think was 23, 24 compare it to when someone is 35 years old. You can see the development in the physical body and every other thing. You can see that the voice is sexier now (laughs). So age has a whole lot of thing to do about that. And aside from that, that’s another thing that Coded Tunes always pays attention to. For this reunion concert, from the person playing the guitar to the Conga to the drummer they are all Coded Tunes. The reason is this we take precaution on everything we want to do. Most times when you go to all these concerts, the equipment, the mic, sounds are not right. You will be on top of your voice and screaming, imagine someone doing that for like five years. After the release of Gongo Aso, I was doing shows back-to-back for almost five years so there is tendency to lose your voice, to get the voice cracked up and all that. So it’s possible. Thank you”.
ID Cabasa corroborating 9ice’s claim said,” I could remember asking him to rest his voice. I could remember those days. Some days we go three, four shows. And sometimes you get to play with a live band; you will do your song on a particular key, they will play it for you on another key. You guys should watch out for some of the new songs that we are doing. We’d loved to play some of them for you to just listen to. We are not going to give excuses. We will try to make sure you guys get value for whatever you expect from 9ice. But also, beyond the voice if there is any artiste that I respect his writing skill in Nigeria I think it will be 9ice. As his maturing, his lyrics are maturing. There is no doubt 9ice still got it, said Cabasa.

Coded Tunes Postpones ‘Reunion Concert’

One of the most anticipated reunion concerts has been sponsored.
According to the Management of ID Cabasa’s Coded Tunes imprint, the event which was billed to hold at the Eko Hotel and Suites come Sunday, May 10 2015 has been sponsored to a yet to be disclosed date. “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we announce the postponement of our most anticipated show the Coded Tunes Live In Concert "Our Story" until a new date which is to be announced soon. This is also geared towards having a better event.
We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Thanks for your understanding”.
The Coded Tune Live in concert has in it lineup the likes 9ice, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1), Pasuma, ID Cabasa, Alibaba, Olamide, Don Jazzy & The Marvins, Lord of Ajasa, Seyi Law, Sound Sultan, Banky and a host of others.
Coded Tune, for some time has been underground, but currently there is a wind of change blowing in the camp of ID Cabasa. The record label which has churned out some of the well-known indigenous talents we have in the country the likes of Lord of Ajasa, Reminisce, Olamide, 9ice, among others is undergoing some metamorphosis as its gets a new Managing Director, simply known as IBEN as well as signing on two new acts- Afro Fusion artiste Gaise and a rapper Chineke Boy. Both acts were recently unveiled to the press.
Addressing journalist at the press briefing, IBEN the new MD of Coded Tunes revealed his dream for the label. According to him, “It’s not just about the reunion concert. The reunion concert is great. It’s a concept that is berth out of bringing together all the artistes that Coded Tunes have produced or discovered over the years. And not only that it’s also to bring together all of the artistes that ID Cabasa have worked with. And it’s been a long time coming for them to all come together to showcase good music like they used”.
IBEN commended ID Casaba’s creative ingenuity, for understanding the science of finding a new act, developing, grooming and taking them to the market to appreciate. “We use this opportunity to introduce to you two new acts, new genre of music, individual talent that ID Cabasa and Coded Tune have been working with for the past couple of months. These guys have been working really hard with ID Cabasa and now we unveil them to you, to have the honour of listening to their music first. We want you to take your time to critic the music. We believe that your opinion matter that’s why we decided to create this forum, “enthused IBEN.
He added: “Gaise has been in the industry but we are privileged to sign him up recently after his contract was over with his former record label. And we have plans to showcase him like never before because he’s a heck of a talent. And Chineke Boy, all I can just say is watch out”.
Chineke Boy expressed his delight for been signed onto Coded Tunes and squashed any tale of competition between himself and Phyno. “Professionally, I’ve been a rapper for about six years now. Respect to those who have been there before me but this is Chineke Boy, I do me. I do good music”. Competition is growth. However I don’t compete with people. I just want to be the best in what I do. I’m over joyed to be part of the label and I hope to add value to them”.

In his remark, Gaise Baba said the contract is a fair. “It is a fair contract. I can tell you that because I have had a contract before. I have been on a label before. This is my second label that I’m working with and I can tell that the contract is a fair one”.

Film Makers Express Total Support for AVRS in Asaba & Benin

The recent public outcry against movie piracy may have triggered a resurgence of interest in the protection of intellectual property among film makers across the country who turned out in exceptionally large numbers at the stakeholders’ sensitization forum recently organized by Audio-Visual Rights Society of Nigeria (AVRS) respectively in Asaba, Delta State capital, and the ancient city of Benin, Edo State.
Recall that following its approval by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in November 2014 as the nation’s sole Collective Management Organization for audio-visual works, AVRS had kick-started its enlightenment campaign activities in February 2015 with  Stakeholders’ Forum in Lagos to enlighten stakeholders in the film industry on the purpose, nature and operations of AVRS, as well as their rights and obligations to the Society, with a view to establishing cordial working relationships with various stakeholders in the film industry.
Chosen for their reputation as active movie production hubs in the South East and South-South axis, the Asaba Forum attracted film makers from Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri, Umuahia and Aba, while Benin had participants from Agbor, Warri, Ekpoma and Port Harcourt in attendance.
Addressing the Forum at the prestigious Orchid Hotel, Asaba, Chairman of AVRS, Mr. Mahmood Ali-Balogun traced the long and painstaking process of the formation of AVRS and various activities leading to its approval on November 20, 2014 by the Nigerian Copyright Commission.
The Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Richard Mofe Damijo who graced the event, expressed happiness that despite the initial delays in registration and approval, AVRS had finally commenced operations. He described the Society as “an idea whose time has come and the beginning of a new journey towards a greater tomorrow in the audio-visual industry”.
A director of AVRS and erstwhile president of Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN), Mr. Emmanuel Isikaku bemoaned the apathetic disposition of some stakeholders towards embracing new ideas. He made it clear that AVRS had become, in its short period of operations, the rallying point for stakeholders in the fight against movie piracy, and enjoined everyone to support the Society to achieve her objectives.
In his own remarks, Onitsha based film producer and marketer and director of AVRS, Chief Osita Okeke (Ossy Afasson) reminded his colleagues from the South-East that their failure over the years to come out and participate fully in the activities of the movie industry had given their counterparts in Lagos an edge, making the industry appear more like a Lagos affair. He appealed to them to have a change of attitude or lose their benefits, as their laid-back posture would not stop initiatives like AVRS from thriving. Other directors of AVRS who spoke in similar manner were Mr. Andy Amenechi and Mr. Patrick Doyle who anchored the event.
General Manager of AVRS, Eme Akiba-Eyo, stressed the need for stakeholders to become registered members and assignees of the Society. Displaying samples of the AVRS membership application form, work declaration form and deed of assignment, she made it clear that ownership of audio-visual content or rights did not confer automatic membership of AVRS on any stakeholder. In her words, “It is very important for a right owner to fill the membership application form which is free, the works declaration form which serves as a proof of content ownership, and the deed of assignment which empowers the Society to represent you, protect your intellectual property rights and ensure that your royalties get to you as and when due”.
In Benin, the Forum which held on April 23rd, 2015 at the exclusive Prestige Hotel, took a similar pattern. The interactive sessions at both meetings provided stakeholders with the opportunity to express their support for the Society, voice their concerns and seek clarifications from the directors on all grey areas.
Chief Peddy Okao, a director of AVRS who coordinated the Benin forum, enjoined every stakeholder present to take advantage and see the establishment of AVRS as additional revenue stream source. He opined that AVRS will use every means at its disposal to collect and distribute to its members revenue that had been hitherto inaccessible by right owners.
Clarifications were given by the General Manager on the role of AVRS as a collecting society serving as a middleman between the right owners and the users of their works on different platforms exploitation. She stressed that AVRS is the only body that is licensed to collect and distribute royalties in the audio visual sector.
The stakeholders expressed total support for AVRS and thanked the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Nigerian Film Corporation, World Intellectual Property Organization and the Norwegian Copyright Development Organization for the roles they played towards the establishment of the Society.
The Asaba and Benin meetings recorded remarkable participation by members of relevant Nollywood guilds and associations including the Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN), Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Association of Movie Producers (AMP) and the Screen Writers Guild of Nigeria. With more than 350 persons in attendance, prominent Nollywood personalities present at both meetings included Kenneth Izuogu, Chief Fabian Dim, Iyke Odife, Jerry Amillio, George Edmond, Ugezu J. Ugezu, Henry Legema, Ifeanyi Azodo, Iyen Agbonifo, Young Emiko, Dom Onu, Leo Ewuzie, Chimdi Chiama, Osagie Ezekiel, Emma Odeli, Akachukwu Ibe, Emeka Iwemba and Ogonna Mbonu. Others are Baba Cliff, West Osasuyi, Eunice Omoregie, Amen Imasuen and Democracy Omoregie.
The interactive sessions at both meetings provided stakeholders with the opportunity to express their support for AVRS, voice their concerns and seek clarifications from the directors in areas such as assignment of rights, licensing and reciprocal agreements.
With the Lagos, Asaba and Benin Stakeholders’ Fora concluded, it is expected that the AVRS sensitization train would be heading to Kano, Abuja, Jos and other significant movie production hubs across the country.
