...why I can’t play a gay role
Nigerian born, US-based actor, Matthew Dada is certainly one actor to watch out for. Though he played a cameo in a Nollywood production some four years ago, he landed his first major Nollywood role recently on the set of Kabira Kafidipe’s movie, “Bintu”.
Matthew
who described the set of “Bintu” as a generally friendly and professional
atmosphere, said, Nollywood has advanced far beyond his expectation. “Being
able to be part of Nollywood is a privilege. Like the movie I just acted, I played
the role of a drama director/bad guy. It was one of those roles
that, if you are used to playing a particular kind of guy, they have you play
something outside of yourself so to speak. But it wasn’t challenging because Kabira
was the one that directed it. She had a way of telling you what she wants from
your character. It’s one of those things as an actor, if a director put
something before you; you go ahead and run with it. And I’m one of those types
of people that regardless of how challenging the role might be, if a director
tells me this is what he or she wants I go ahead and deliver. I did what I was
supposed to do and she loved the whole thing.
Asked if
he has any Nollywood crush, the dark, hunky actor said, “Actually I do have
one. I got to meet her in 2013 when I came to Nigeria while I was attending an
audition of Femi Branch. Kate Henshaw is probably my only crush in Nollywood. She’s
such a fantastic person. She’s so welcoming and very warm as a person. For someone
of her status, she was so down-to-earth. She was so supportive on set. That’s why
I say she’s probably my only crush in Nollywood”.
In another
shocking revelation, the actor who revealed he has a lot to offer to Nollywood even
though he respects the great talents in the industry said his only restriction
as far as interpreting his passion is concern is that he can’t play a gay role.
“I have been in the US for quite a while and I’ve done a lot of short films and
films and there is no limit to how far I can push myself when it comes to
expressing this beautiful passion of acting. But, I have just one restriction. I
can’t see myself being gay. I can’t play a gay person. That’s the only
restriction I have. Everything else, as far as nudity is concern I’m very, very
comfortable in my own skin”.
“I don’t
have anything against gay people but personally I just can’t play that role”.
